Open Science Pre-events of the Closing Ceremony of the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development

Submitted by ogomezal on

All human activities in the twenty-first century are profoundly impacted, shaped, driven and enabled by science, technology and innovation (STI). However, there are considerable differences across communities in their abilities to harness the potential of STI for human well-being and environmental sustainability. Open science can be a powerful tool to bridge the existing science, technology and innovation gaps, to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and to promote the human right to science.

To explore the contributions of open science to the future of science for sustainable development, the closing ceremony of the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development will be preceded by a pre-session dedicated to open science.

The pre-session “Opening Science for All” will consist of two parts:

  • Global Launch of the UNESCO Open Science Outlook, and
  • UNESCO/CERN Dialoque on Equity in Open Science

The events will bring together the participants of the Closing Ceremony of the International Year of Basic Sciences (to be held at the CERN Science Gateway on 15 December 2023) and academic institutes, UN entities, diplomatic missions and other communities based in Geneva and involved in the promotion of open science. This gathering will provide an excellent platform to launch the first UNESCO Open Science Outlook and to discuss future actions to support equitable open sciences across the world in line with the 2021 UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science and following the CERN-NASA Summit on Open Science held at CERN in July 2023.
