The ECAL DCS operator is a very important role for the ECAL community. The ECAL DCS operator role is part of the task force to monitor and operate the CMS ECAL and Preshower detectors. In other words, The ECAL DCS operator can be considered the firstline support of the detector, allowing the ECAL to operate without having a 24/7 in-person shift crew in CMS/P5. The shifts are quite smooth during stable conditions, they can be done on remote, reducing the job to a matter of responding to phone calls and acting on-demand whenever there is a task to execute or when issues arise. This means that, ECAL DCS operators are most of the time "idle", waiting for instructions or calls from the control room.
As ECAL DCS operator, you would receive training to understand what are the different operations that one can perform over the detector, the context, the different interactions with the CMS and ECAL crew and specific instructions in case of issues. In addition to this, the ECAL DCS Operator counts with a pool of experts on different domains, going from the LV and HV powering systems to Cooling, Detector Control System experts or the ECAL Technical coordination. This means that ECAL DCS Operators will always have assistance in case of any abnormal situation.
All operations and common issues are documented using the CMS ECAL DCS team website, in the Troubleshooting guidelines for ECAL DCS operators section. In addition to this, the CMS ECAL DCS alarm system has been redesigned to have a one-to-one access from the alarm to its dedicated instructions.
As ECAL DCS operator you will be able to:
- Operate the detector on request from the community
- First-line support for operational problems
- Interface between ECAL DCS expert and the other parties
