The CERN Experimental Programme (Grey Book database)

The maintenance of the data is ensured by the Users’ Office together with the larger experiments Secretariats.

EP

The Experimental Physics (EP) Department carries out research in the field of experimental particle physics. It aims to provide a stimulating scientific atmosphere and remains an important reference centre for the European physics community. It contributes to the education and training of young scientists.

EP is one of the largest departments at CERN, with about 500 staff members and over 300 other members of personnel: Fellows, Associates, Students and Apprentices. In addition it hosts the approximately 12,000 Users that visit CERN from their home institutes around the world to perform scientific research.

TH

The CERN Theory Department is committed to creating an inclusive scientific environment in which everyone has the same opportunities, and people are evaluated only by their individual talent. We strongly support the principles of respect, tolerance and equality in which we firmly believe. These principles define the spirit of CERN, guiding our work and mutual relationships. We do not tolerate any violation of these principles in our working environment. We actively promote diversity in all its forms as a value that enriches our community and helps it thrive. The ideals and ethical values that inspire the Theory Department are fully in line with the mission and fundamental principles of CERN.

IT

The IT Department provides the information technology required for the fulfilment of CERN’s mission in an efficient and effective manner.

This includes data processing and storage, networks and support for the LHC and non-LHC experimental programme, as well as services for the accelerator complex and for the whole laboratory and its users.

We also provide a ground for advanced research and development of new IT technologies, with partners from other research institutions and industry.

PRJ – Projects

CERN Neutrino Platform (CENF) Initial Mandate (2014)

The CERN Neutrino Platform is CERN's undertaking to foster and contribute to fundamental research in neutrino physics at particle accelerators worldwide, as recommended by the 2013 European Strategy for Particle Physics.

  • Assist the various groups in their R&D phase (detectors and components) in the short and medium term and give coherence to a fragmented European Neutrino Community
  • Provide to the ν community a test beam infrastructure (charged particles)
  • Bring R&D at the level of technology demonstrators in view of major technical decisions
  • Continue R&D on ν beam, as a possible base for further collaborations
  • Support the short baseline activities (infrastructure & detectors)
  • Support the long baseline activities (infrastructure & detectors)

Development and Innovation Unit

The Development and Innovation Unit (RCS-PRJ-DI) contributes to longer-term detector and imaging technology development work carried out at CERN and elsewhere, with the parallel aim of generating benefits to the society. The Unit works with and engages external partners to foster the development and innovation potential of detector technology outside the domain of particle physics. The Unit works closely together with the related Departments and Groups, including for example EU and KT (IPT), EP, IT and DG. It actively seeks external funding for the above activities, from sources such as the European Union.

SIS

The Scientific Information Service (currently the RCS-SIS group) has for its mandate the management of the Library and the Historical and Scientific Archives of CERN.

  • It should acquire and manage information resources in all fields of relevance to the Organization, and make these accessible in the most convenient way to the worldwide particle physics community.
  • It should provide services for obtaining information which is not directly available on site.
  • It should advise CERN divisions on the best ways of ensuring that all relevant documents are made publicly available.
  • It is also responsible for the distribution of CERN publications (CERN Reports and other documents).
  • It is responsible for safeguarding documents and files of potential interest to the Organization and for historical research.
  • It should provide information about and access to the archived material. It should advise CERN divisions and collaborations in archival issues and records management.

The Service is following the guidelines drawn up by the Scientific Information Policy Board.
